“A nurse in the Warsaw Ghetto” the plaque reads. Before us stands a simple tribute a testament to Luba Blum-Bielecka a remarkable woman whose life intertwined with the darkest chapters of Warsaw’s history. The Luba Blum-Bielecka Plaque is more than just a name etched in stone. It’s a window into the unwavering courage and compassion of a nurse who dedicated herself to saving lives amidst unimaginable horrors.

Luba Blum-Bielecka was born in Wilno in 1906. She was the eldest of ten children. Her life was far from ordinary. She became a socialist activist joining the Bund’s youth movement. She was also a highly skilled nurse. She trained nurses. She even became assistant director of the nursing school in Warsaw.

When the Germans invaded Poland Luba’s life was irrevocably altered. Her family was forced into the Warsaw Ghetto. Yet even within the ghetto’s confines she found a way to continue her life’s work. She reopened the nursing school providing training and care in the face of unimaginable hardship. This was the only school allowed by the Germans inside the Ghetto.

The horrors intensified. During the liquidation of the Warsaw Ghetto Luba’s students were sent to Treblinka. Her own children were also targeted for deportation. But through sheer determination and with help from Polish nurses Luba managed to save her children. They narrowly escaped the death camps.

Tragedy struck again. The Nazis took over her hospital. They executed all patients including newborn infants and most of the staff. Luba and her children survived by hiding in the hospital cellar. Her husband Abrasza a leader of the Jewish Fighting Organization was also tragically killed. He fought bravely in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. He was captured and murdered by the Gestapo.

After the war Luba continued to serve others. She directed a children’s home in Otwock. She worked in a Warsaw nursing school. Her dedication and bravery earned her the prestigious Florence Nightingale Medal in 1966. Later she even worked in a hospital in New York.

Luba Blum-Bielecka passed away in 1973. She was buried in Warsaw’s Okopowa Street Jewish Cemetery. This plaque stands as a reminder of her life. It’s a tribute to her unwavering spirit her compassion and her incredible strength in the face of unimaginable suffering. It serves as a powerful memorial not only to her but to all the victims of the Holocaust. The plaque is a poignant symbol of hope resilience and the enduring human spirit. It is a story worth remembering. Let’s reflect on the sacrifices made and the bravery shown during those dark days.
