“What’s in a name?” they ask. Here at the Löwe von Aspern War Memorial the name tells almost everything. The Lion of Aspern. It stands here as a sandstone testament to a battle fought long ago. It commemorates the Austrian soldiers who fell bravely during the Battle of Aspern-Essling.
Let’s step back in time to 1809. Vienna stood as a coveted prize. Napoleon’s forces clashed with the Austrian army led by Archduke Karl. The battle raged in and around Aspern. The village found itself at the epicenter of a brutal struggle. Nine times control of Aspern shifted. It was a see-saw of violence and determination.
Amidst the chaos a man named Johann von Hiller emerged as a key figure. As commander of the VI. Armee-Korps he helped the Austrians. They held their ground. This battle marked a turning point. Napoleon suffered his first defeat in open battle. His aura of invincibility shattered on this very ground. The cost was immense. The Austrians suffered 23300 casualties. The French endured even greater losses with approximately 27000. It was an unprecedented bloodbath for both sides.
Years later Archduke Albrecht sought to honor his father’s memory. He commissioned a memorial and selected this spot in front of St. Martin’s Church. This location was chosen because the church and the area around it were at the heart of the conflict. Anton Dominik Fernkorn one of the great artists of his time was chosen. Fernkorn dedicated himself to the project beginning in 1855.
After various designs Fernkorn finally conceived the powerful image of a dying lion. The lion is a symbol of courage and sacrifice. Fernkorn studied lions at the Schönbrunn Zoo. He wanted to capture every detail with lifelike precision.
Notice the lion’s posture. It lies in its death throes atop a stone base adorned with oak leaves. Look closely and you’ll see a Napoleonic eagle clutched between its paws. Beneath the lion lies an imperial cloak. At the lion’s left flank are military banners. A sword pierces the lion. Its tip protrudes from the animal’s left shoulder. The sculpture is made of sandstone.
The inscription reads “To the memory of the Austrian warriors who honourably died in battle on May 21 and 22 1809.” It serves as a reminder of their sacrifice. The Löwe von Aspern was unveiled on May 22 1858 the 49th anniversary of the battle.
Contrary to some beliefs the lion does not represent Napoleon. The lion symbolizes the Austrian soldiers and civilians who lost their lives. Napoleon’s emblem was the eagle not the lion.
Each winter a wooden structure protects the sandstone from the elements. A poster of the monument is placed on the wooden structure. It ensures that visitors still see the Löwe von Aspern even while it is covered.
