Pause for a moment before this replica of a sacred space. The Lourdesgrotte is a replica of the Grotte of Massabielle. It represents Our Lady of Lourdes in southern France. In 1858, Saint Bernadette said she saw the Mother of God here.

The Lourdesgrotte has a statue of the Madonna. Joseph-Hugues Fabisch created the original in 1864. He based it on Bernadette’s description for Massabielle.

These grottoes became popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Some were built inside Catholic churches. Others were built outside in churchyards.
