“In this house, lived Louis Haefliger from 1954 to 1993.” The inscription on the simple plaque reads. It doesn’t sound like much. It’s a short statement on a wall. But the Louis Häfliger Plaque on a modest building in Vienna tells a powerful story. It’s a story of bravery and humanity, of a man who risked everything to save countless lives.

In the chaos of the closing months of World War II, Louis Häfliger, a Swiss bank clerk, volunteered to be a delegate for the International Committee of the Red Cross. He was tasked with delivering food to Mauthausen concentration camp. However, Häfliger learned that SS officers planned to blow up the camp, leaving the thousands of prisoners inside to die. His heart filled with a sense of duty, Häfliger made a decision that would alter his life. He contacted approaching American troops, leading them to Mauthausen to liberate the prisoners.

He smuggled a Red Cross flag, and with the help of a sympathetic SS officer, Guido Reimer, they drove to the outskirts of Mauthausen to find the Americans. Häfliger convinced the American soldiers to liberate the camp. His actions ultimately saved tens of thousands of lives.

His heroic effort was condemned by the ICRC, who saw his actions as a direct violation of their neutrality policy. However, his extraordinary bravery earned him the gratitude of the survivors of Mauthausen. Today, his legacy lives on. The Louis Häfliger Plaque serves as a constant reminder. A silent hero who risked his own life. He changed the course of history by showing compassion, courage, and a willingness to act in the face of profound darkness.
