“Green and Gold forever!” Do you hear the echoes of Viking pride reverberating through these halls? We are standing before Loudoun Valley High School a place of history, growth, and community.
Loudoun Valley High School opened its doors in 1962. For many years, it was the only high school serving western Loudoun County. Imagine a close-knit rural school maintaining its character despite the changing times.
For decades, Loudoun Valley High School remained relatively small. Enrollment hovered around 800 students. The rapid development seen in eastern Loudoun County in the 80s and 90s largely passed it by. Until 1999–2000, it was the smallest high school in the county.
The early 2000s brought significant change. Immigration led to a surge in student numbers. In 2002, Harmony Intermediate School opened to accommodate eighth and ninth graders. Loudoun Valley High School then served students in grades 10 through 12.
By 2005–2006, Loudoun Valley High School had become the largest in the county. It held 1955 students. Overcrowding became a major issue. Relief came in 2010 with the opening of Woodgrove High School.
Loudoun Valley High School returned to its original structure. It once again housed grades 9 through 12. Harmony Intermediate became Harmony Middle School serving grades 6 through 8. In 2011, Loudoun Valley High School graduated its largest class ever with 558 students.
Loudoun Valley High School has faced challenges. In 2013–2014, the principal Susan Ross was at the center of controversy regarding grade tampering allegations.
Loudoun Valley High School holds full accreditation. It meets the standards set by the Virginia Department of Education. The school’s mascot is the Viking. Its sports teams compete in the Dulles District during the regular season. Post-season play sees them in the Dulles District, VHSL Class 4 Region C, and VHSL Class 4 for state competitions.
Notably, the Loudoun Valley High School cross country team achieved national recognition. In 2017, the team was ranked #1 in the country. They achieved a perfect score at the state meet and won the Nike Cross Nationals XC Meet. In 2018, they defended their title at the Nike Cross Nationals XC Meet.
Many successful individuals have walked these halls. Mark Herring, the forty-eighth Attorney General of Virginia, is an alumnus. Drew Hunter signed a professional track contract with Adidas. Rob Jones is a United States Marine and athlete. Jimmye Laycock is the former head coach of William and Mary’s football team. Chip Roy represents Texas in Congress.
Loudoun Valley High School continues to evolve. It maintains a strong academic record. Niche.com gives Loudoun Valley High School an overall grade of A-. The school boasts a 97% proficiency in reading and a 97% average graduation rate.
The Viking Theatre is another point of pride. Students showcase their talents in plays and musical performances. The Drama Boosters support the theater program through various events.
As we stand here remember the legacy of Loudoun Valley High School. A place where students learn grow and strive for excellence. The green and gold of Loudoun Valley High School represent not just colors but a tradition of community and achievement.
