“Is that a mermaid?” I hear someone whisper. You are standing before the Warsaw Mermaid a bronze sculpture in the Old Town Market Place. This isn’t just any statue. It’s a symbol of Warsaw itself. Legend says this mermaid chose to stay after stopping on a riverbank. Fishermen initially feared her. She tangled nets released their fish. They planned to trap her. Then they heard her singing. They fell in love. A rich merchant imprisoned her. The fishermen rescued her. From that day on she protects the city. The original bronze zinc sculpture stood here from 1855 to 1928. It was moved around. It suffered damage from vandalism. In 2008 the original went to the Museum of Warsaw. This is a copy. The detail is remarkable. Look closely at her sword and shield.
