Did you know Long Branch was once a bustling summer resort? Imagine wealthy families arriving by steamer for their holidays. Long Branch in Toronto’s southwest corner is more than just a neighbourhood. It’s a living testament to a fascinating past.

Long Branch started as part of a huge land grant. Colonel Samuel Smith received it after serving in the Queen’s Rangers. His modest cabin stood near Etobicoke Creek. It lasted into the 1950s a remarkable survival. The area remained largely undeveloped until the late 1800s.

Then entrepreneurs saw its potential. They created Sea Breeze Park a summer resort. It was renamed Long Branch Park after a similar resort in New Jersey. Soon a grand hotel appeared. It hosted lavish parties. It was a place of elegance and luxury. The hotel’s own steamer brought guests from Toronto.

The arrival of the Toronto & Mimico Electric Railway boosted Long Branch’s popularity. More people visited the park. More homes were built. The area thrived. Long Branch became a true community. It grew around the resort. The original cottages became year-round homes. This changed the area’s character. It transitioned from a seasonal resort to a permanent residential area.

However nature intervened. Hurricane Hazel in 1954 devastated Long Branch. Flooding destroyed many homes. Several lives were tragically lost. The disaster reshaped the landscape. The parkland of Marie Curtis Park now stands in place of lost homes. This transformation reflects Long Branch’s resilience.

Even Long Branch’s race track left a mark. The Canadian International Stakes once bore its name. The race was run at the track north of town. Today the races are held at Woodbine Racetrack.

Long Branch became a village in 1930. It later joined Etobicoke. Eventually it became part of Toronto. Yet Long Branch retains its unique identity. It’s a blend of history and modern life. The old cottages and new homes stand side-by-side. This tells a story of transformation. It shows Long Branch’s enduring spirit.

Today Long Branch is a vibrant residential district. It has a charming lakeshore. It still echoes with tales from the past. Those tales resonate in its streets. They whisper in the wind off Lake Ontario. Come explore this fascinating neighbourhood. Discover Long Branch’s legacy for yourself.
