Manufactured in 1965 by Fablok in Chrzanów, Poland, Lokomotywa SM03-189 stands as a testament to a bygone era of Polish railway. This diesel shunting locomotive, with its modest 110-kilowatt engine, played a vital role in the Polish State Railways (PKP). Lokomotywa SM03-189 is more than just a piece of machinery. It represents a chapter in Poland’s industrial history, a time when these small but powerful locomotives were the workhorses of railyards and stations across the country. The SM03 class, to which Lokomotywa SM03-189 belongs, was designed in 1958 for shunting and light line service. Imagine this locomotive bustling about, maneuvering carriages and freight cars with surprising agility. Its mechanical transmission, coupled with a four-speed gearbox, allowed Lokomotywa SM03-189 to reach speeds up to 45.8 km/h, making it perfect for its role. The design was simple but effective. A welded frame, two axles, and a body divided into three compartments: two for the engine and one elevated compartment for the engineer. Lokomotywa SM03-189 featured air brakes, a sanding device for extra grip on the rails, and even a sound horn. Though small, it was equipped for serious work. Lokomotywa SM03-189 likely spent its working life in the Łódź Olechów locomotive depot, based on records from 2016, 2017, and 2018. By 2019, it was spotted in Zduńska Wola Karsznice. This suggests a long and active service life. Today, few of its kind remain operational within PKP. Many have been retired, left on side tracks as silent witnesses to their past. Lokomotywa SM03-189 is a survivor, a tangible piece of Poland’s railway heritage.
