Picture six imposing blocks rising against the Kowloon skyline. This is Lok Nga Court a Home Ownership Scheme estate. It stands adjacent to the much larger Lok Wah Estate. Completed in 1984 Lok Nga Court offers a unique glimpse into Hong Kong’s housing history.

Lok Nga Court wasn’t just built. It was part of a larger vision. The 1970s and 80s saw rapid growth in Hong Kong. The government needed to house a burgeoning population. Lok Wah Estate was the answer. A massive public housing project built on levelled Dragon Hill. Lok Nga Court was designed to offer home ownership. A chance for residents to step out of the rental system.

Construction on Lok Nga Court began with a $146 million tender approved in 1981. The project comprised six residential blocks. Each with a flexible design. A four-story car park topped with an indoor games hall was also included. Think of it as a community hub. A place for residents to connect and relax.

The official opening of Lok Wah Estate happened in 1985. Governor Sir Edward Youde was originally scheduled to attend. Unfortunately illness prevented his presence. Sir David Akers-Jones officiated instead. This highlights the importance of Lok Nga Court. It was viewed as a significant achievement.

Lok Nga Court was part of a larger attempt to improve living conditions. Many early tenants were relocated from temporary housing areas. These areas suffered from inadequate living conditions. Lok Nga Court provided a marked improvement. Homes were modern and better equipped.

Today Lok Nga Court remains a vibrant part of Ngau Tau Kok. It stands as a testament to Hong Kong’s commitment to housing. It stands as a symbol of progress and opportunity. A place where residents built lives and community. A place with a story. A story we’ve just begun to explore.
