Gazing at the placid waters beside Lock 10, have you ever pondered the stories these stones could tell? Lock 10 whispers tales of ingenuity, perseverance, and reinvention. This isn’t just a lock. It’s a time capsule, a monument to the ever-changing currents of history. Lock 10, built in 1830, originally served the Chesapeake & Ohio Canal. This canal was a vital artery, transporting coal and timber from Cumberland, Maryland, to Georgetown in Washington, D.C. The lock keeper, residing in the adjacent lockhouse, held the key to the canal’s flow, diligently opening and closing the gates for passing boats.

The C&O Canal, however, faced an unexpected rival: the railroad. Faster and more efficient, trains quickly overshadowed the canal, leading to its decline in the early 20th century. Lock 10, along with the rest of the canal, fell into disrepair. But like a phoenix from the ashes, the canal received a new lease on life during the 1930s with President Roosevelt’s New Deal. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), comprised of African American workers from camps near Carderock, undertook the monumental task of restoring the canal. Lock 10 became a symbol of this revitalization. The workers meticulously repaired locks, improved the towpath, and re-watered the first 22 miles of the canal.

Lock 10 stands as a testament to the CCC’s efforts. The lockhouse, furnished with 1930s-era decor, offers a glimpse into the lives of those who labored to revive the canal. Inside, interpretive panels and a scrapbook further illuminate the CCC’s story. Today, Lock 10 isn’t just a relic of the past. It’s part of the Canal Quarters program, allowing visitors to experience history firsthand by spending a night in the restored lockhouse. The forested surroundings beckon outdoor enthusiasts, while the nearby Clara Barton Parkway offers convenient access to the Washington, D.C., area. So, as you stand before Lock 10, remember. It is a symbol of resilience, a testament to the enduring power of human endeavor.
