Time stood still in Lo Wai Village. Its ancient walls whispered tales of generations past. Lo Wai a village nestled in Tsuen Wan District is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a living testament to Hong Kong’s rich history. Lo Wai was one of the first villages established by the Tang clan. They branched out from Kam Tin in the 14th century. It was the earliest of the five renowned walled villages in Lung Yeuk Tau Fanling.

The Tang clan established eleven villages in the area. They’re known as the ‘Five Wais and Six Tsuens’. Lo Wai stands proudly as a walled village. Brick walls enclose it on all four sides. This original layout has remained remarkably intact even after renovations. The original entrance tower stood on the north side. However for better feng shui it was moved to its present east-facing location.

In 1991 a portion of the wall needed repair. The North District Office provided the necessary funds. Then in 1998 the complete restoration of the entrance tower and the walls was finished. This meticulous restoration work ensured Lo Wai’s legacy would endure. The Entrance Tower and Enclosing Walls of Lo Wai were declared monuments in 1997. This recognition highlights its importance as a historical site. Lo Wai is a precious piece of Hong Kong’s heritage. A quiet witness to the ebb and flow of time.

Imagine the villagers who walked these very walls. They lived their lives within these protective boundaries. They built their homes. They raised their families.
