Lo Foundation. The naming recognized the Foundation’s support. It supported the University’s development and biomedical sciences research.
Distinguished guests attended the ceremony. They included government officials and university members. The Lo Kwee-Seong Integrated Biomedical Sciences Building marks a new chapter. It signifies the University’s research and development. CUHK excels as a research university. Area 39 is being developed into a key research hub. The Lo Kwee-Seong Integrated Biomedical Sciences Building is situated here.
This nine-story building has been functional since early 2012. It covers 18264 square meters. Inside are theme-based laboratories. They use an open-laboratory format. There is also a demonstration laboratory, seminar rooms, and research commons. Meeting rooms, breakout areas and administrative offices are included.
Dr. KO Wing-man complimented CUHK. He noted its rapid development. He was honoured to witness the Lo Kwee-Seong Integrated Biomedical Sciences Building opening. It marked an important milestone. The School of Biomedical Sciences shares the Government’s Theme-Based Research Scheme. It actively pursues thematic research programs. This promotes Hong Kong’s long-term development. CUHK will scale new heights. It will lift the quality of life.
In 2010, the K.S. Lo Foundation donated HKD150 million to CUHK. A third established the Lo Kwee-Seong Biomedical Research Fund. It supports biomedical research. This includes research on soybeans and staple foods.
Dr. Peter LO is Chairman of the K.S. Lo Foundation. He said the Foundation built a close partnership with CUHK. He hopes the infrastructure will strengthen interdisciplinary research. He wishes the University the best. They should continue advancing human knowledge for society.

The School of Biomedical Sciences is the building’s main occupant. It is equipped with biomedical equipment. Researchers use cutting-edge technologies. They study human diseases. The goal is to understand pathogenesis. They also seek to improve the diagnosis and treatment of illnesses. The School’s key research areas include cancer and inflammation. They also include neuro-degeneration and stem cells.
The School of Pharmacy occupies the 8th floor. It houses advanced equipment. Pharmacists and researchers develop new drug products. They strive to treat diseases. They also assure the safety and quality of existing pharmaceuticals.
The innovative Animal Holding Core includes procedure rooms. It also features a surgical operating suite. There are special rooms for animal behavior experimentation. All rooms have independent controls. These control temperature, lighting, humidity and air management. A professionally managed aquatic zone is available.
The building has energy efficient features. It earned the Platinum Standard rating. Facades face north and south. Sunshades move with the sun’s angle. This minimizes heat. A centralized district cooling system serves the building. Sustainable features include vertical greening. There are also motion sensors for lighting.
A dedicated laboratory control system ensures safety. An emergency ventilation system activates if needed. It runs in full fresh air mode. An alarm warns people against entering affected labs. Different zones have pressure control systems. Laboratories are at negative pressure. This prevents airborne hazards from spreading. Bio-safety cabinets and fume cupboards are provided. Fume exhaust fans are on the roof. They safely discharge chemical fumes.
