Have you ever gazed upon a mountain resembling a tiger’s head? Lo Fu Tau on Lantau Island is just that. This magnificent peak looms behind Discovery Bay its rocky outline strikingly similar to a crouching tiger. Lo Fu Tau is famous for its challenging hike. The trail offers stunning panoramic views. On a clear day you can see the skyscrapers of Central across Victoria Harbour. You can also see neighboring mountains.
The hike itself is a rewarding experience. It takes approximately two to four hours depending on your pace. The trail is varied. It includes stairs rocky trails dirt trails and steep hills. It’s considered one of Hong Kong’s finest trails.
As you ascend Lo Fu Tau you’ll encounter fascinating rock formations. These include Sword Testing Stone Duckling Rock and Peach Rock. These formations are natural wonders adding intrigue to the journey. The climb towards the summit can take one to two hours. You’ll see the tiger’s head from a distance as you ascend. Though it might appear short the path up is very steep. The trail changes from a slightly steep dirt path to rocky and steep sections. Closer to the summit the trail levels out.
Near the summit there’s an open area a great spot for photos and a rest. Look to the left. You’ll see a path leading to a cliff. From this angle the rock resembles a tiger’s back overlooking Discovery Bay. At the summit there are two viewing points. Lo Fu Tau Viewing Point Northwest and Lo Fu Tau Viewing Point Southeast offer breathtaking vistas.
The most challenging part is over. The descent towards Mui Wo is a gentler walk. The Lo Fu Tau Country Trail continues offering pleasant views. You’ll pass more rock formations. Duckling Rock is first followed by Sword Testing Stone and Peach Rock. The trail eventually ends at a junction. The Hong Kong Olympic Trail begins there. From there you can continue to Mui Wo or head to Pak Mong.
