Whispers of incense. Lo Chau Wan’s history is woven into the very fabric of Lantau Island. This secluded bay in northwestern Lantau has borne witness to centuries of change. Indigenous inhabitants have called Lo Chau Wan home for generations. Their lives intertwined with the rhythms of the sea and the land.

Before the hustle of modern Hong Kong. Before the towering structures of the airport. Lo Chau Wan thrived. During the Ming Dynasty it was renowned for its incense production. Imagine the fragrant air the scent of agarwood filling the valleys. Then came the Great Clearance. Villagers were forcibly evacuated from Lantau Island. Lo Chau Wan lay deserted. The fragrant legacy interrupted. People weren’t allowed to return until 1669. Even then Lo Chau Wan remained largely uninhabited for a time.

Sha Lo Wan Tsuen slowly began to re-emerge in the 18th century. Villagers rebuilt their lives. They fished the waters and cultivated the land. Life was hard. Pirates and bandits frequently attacked the small village. In the late 1930s they even occupied the village for a whole year. A testament to the risks faced by the early settlers of Lo Chau Wan.

The discovery of tungsten ore in the 1950s brought a period of unexpected growth. Miners flocked to Lo Chau Wan. The population soared reaching 4000 by 1971. The hillsides were transformed. Tunnels dug into the earth. The landscape scarred by mining operations. The once clear streams became polluted with silt. The legacy of this mining boom is still visible. The population eventually dropped again. The tranquil rhythm returned.

Today Lo Chau Wan stands as a testament to resilience and the enduring connection between people and place. The Ba Kong Temple and Tin Hau Temple stand side-by-side. They watch over the bay. Silent witnesses to the village’s rich and complex history. The annual Hung Shing Festival continues a vital link to the past. The village remains accessible only by foot or ferry. A peaceful retreat from the modern world. A place where history echoes in the gentle lapping of waves against the shore. A place where the story of Lo Chau Wan continues to unfold.
