Hidden in Stuttgart’s Wangen district, the LKA-Longhorn pulses with a history as diverse as its music. The LKA-Longhorn wasn’t always a haven for rock and pop. Opened in 1984 as the “Longhorn Country & Western Saloon,” it catered to the American soldiers stationed in Stuttgart. The name, a nod to the iconic Texas longhorn cattle, quickly became synonymous with a slice of Americana in Germany. CNN even featured the LKA-Longhorn in a report, drawing curious visitors from across the Atlantic. The LKA-Longhorn made headlines in 1984 for hosting Germany’s first public male strip show. This bold move, featuring US soldiers as performers and a women-only audience, sparked controversy and fines from authorities. Undeterred, the LKA-Longhorn’s owners argued they were simply allowing US citizens to express their culture. This paved the way for other American-style events like topless women’s boxing and mud wrestling. The LKA-Longhorn’s transformation began in 1987 when concert agencies recognized its potential. Punk icon Nina Hagen performed a successful show, opening the doors for artists like Bobby Womack, Neon Judgement, and The Pogues. With the departure of US troops after the Cold War and the Gulf War, the LKA-Longhorn adapted once more. It officially became the LKA-Longhorn, with “LKA” standing for “Longhorn-Kultur-Austausch” (Longhorn Cultural Exchange). Following a renovation in 1993, it evolved into the concert hall and nightclub we know today. The LKA-Longhorn became a melting pot of musical genres. From the raw energy of Nirvana in 1991, opening for Sonic Youth, to the dark melodies of Type O Negative and the heavy metal of Sepultura, the stage has seen it all. The LKA-Longhorn isn’t just about big names. It’s a champion of local talent. Starting in 1994, the “Star Club” and later the “LKA-Live-Club” offered aspiring Stuttgart bands a professional platform to hone their skills. This commitment continued through partnerships with festivals like Emergenza and Youngsterball, solidifying the LKA-Longhorn’s role in nurturing the local music scene. The LKA-Longhorn’s dedication hasn’t gone unnoticed. It has received numerous awards, including the Club Award from the Popakademie Baden-Württemberg for several years and the MARS Award for Best Live Location. Even a global pandemic couldn’t dim its spirit. In 2020, the LKA-Longhorn underwent a significant renovation, ensuring its legacy continues. So, the next time you hear the roar of music emanating from the LKA-Longhorn, remember its journey. It’s a testament to the power of adaptation, community, and the enduring spirit of rock and roll.
