In 1926, a seed of hope was planted in Claremont, Cape Town. This seed was Livingstone High School. Founded by Dr. Abdullah Abdurahman, Livingstone High School emerged as a beacon of education for children of color during a time when opportunities were scarce. Initially starting with Standard 5 (Grade 7), it later blossomed into a full-fledged high school. Livingstone High School stands proudly on Imam Haron Road. It has weathered storms and overcome obstacles, its motto “Nulla Vestigia Vertrorsum” (No Step Back) a testament to its resilience. The school’s buildings themselves tell a story. Originally a dairy farm, the structures were transformed into classrooms, stables became learning spaces, and tents housed senior pupils. Livingstone High School expanded, adding wings and utilizing surrounding buildings. It became a haven for students denied opportunities elsewhere. Did you know that in 2018, Livingstone High School achieved a remarkable 99.3% matric pass rate? This achievement is even more impressive considering the relatively low school fees of R7,640 per year. The school’s alumni include prominent figures like Geraldine Fraser-Moleketi, a South African politician, and Ebrahim Rasool, a former Premier of the Western Cape. Livingstone High School’s journey has been marked by both triumph and adversity. The school faced numerous challenges during apartheid, including the forced removal of “African” classified students and the transfer of esteemed teachers. Yet, through it all, the school persevered. The support of parents and the dedication of staff ensured its survival and continued success. Livingstone High School has become a symbol of hope and a testament to the power of education to transform lives.
