Here stands Living Word Community Church. Its story is deeply intertwined with faith and community service.

In 1991, Eugene and Patrice Sheppard saw a dire need. Poverty and homelessness were rampant in the District’s far southwest and southeast neighborhoods. The Sheppards worked in a shelter. They sought divine guidance through prayer and fasting. They felt the city was bound. It was bound by the spirit of Babylon.

The Lord answered them with scriptures. These scriptures highlighted the importance of the Word. They established Living Word Church. Their vision was clear. Government programs could address material needs. But the poor in spirit needed Jesus Christ. They needed Him to build their lives. They needed Him to gain eternal life.

Rev. Eugene Sheppard has ministered for over 30 years. He is a pastor, teacher and evangelist. He has traveled extensively. His missions have taken him to Haiti, India, South Africa and England. He studied biblical studies. He attended Trinity Bible College. He also attended Beth Messiah Bible College and Washington Bible College.

Mrs. Patrice Sheppard is the Executive Pastor. Before this role, she served in the National Association of Minority Contractors. She also worked in the DC government. She was in the Office of the Secretary. She was also in the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development. She studied at Southeastern University. She also studied at the University of the District of Columbia.

Pastors Cliff and Sherry Beckford joined in 2015. Before that, they founded Laurel Lakes Christian Center in Maryland. Pastor Cliff is a graduate of Logos Bible College and Washington Saturday College. He is a teacher of the Word.
