“Lystum,” they called it back in 1292. Today, we know it as List auf Sylt. This northernmost municipality in Germany sits on the beautiful island of Sylt. It’s a place shaped by wind, sea, and sand.

List auf Sylt boasts a fascinating history. Originally a Danish settlement, List was destroyed by a great flood in 1364. The villagers rebuilt it further east. For centuries, List remained part of the Kingdom of Denmark. It was an enclave within the Duchy of Schleswig. Imagine small areas of Denmark controlled directly by the Danish king. This lasted until after the Danish-German War in 1864. Then, List became part of Prussia.

Life in List was tough but resourceful. People farmed oysters. They raised sheep. They collected and sold gull eggs. List even served as a protective anchorage. In 1644, a Swedish-Dutch fleet was defeated by Danish ships here. This victory led to naming the anchorage north of town Königshafen or King’s Harbour.

List saw significant changes in the 20th century. During World War I, it became a naval air base. The Nazis expanded military installations in the 1930s. This dramatically increased the town’s population. After World War II, List housed displaced Germans. The navy returned in 1955.

Today, tourism dominates List’s economy. The military influence has faded, but the town’s spirit remains. List is known for its stunning landscape. Dunes and heath surround the village. The Ellenbogen peninsula lies to the north. Germany’s only shifting sand dune sits to the west. Imagine a landscape where sheep, seals, and birds roam free.

List auf Sylt proudly holds its title as Germany’s northernmost municipality. It’s part of the Zipfelbund. This group includes the four outermost places in Germany. List offers long sandy beaches and a relaxing atmosphere. The harbor buzzes with Scandinavian-style restaurants and shops.

Here in List harbor, you can hop on a ferry to the Danish island of Rømø. The ferry has been running since 1963. Or, take an Adler ship excursion to the Wadden Sea. The Erlebniszentrum Naturgewalten offers exhibits about the island’s natural forces. Opened in 2009, it explains the sea, wind, and sand that shape Sylt.

List auf Sylt truly captures the spirit of Sylt. It’s a place of resilience and natural beauty. From its Danish roots to its modern-day tourism, List has a unique story. The constant dance between land and sea shapes List’s identity. Come and experience the northernmost point of Germany. It is a place where history and nature meet.
