Around 1810, saplings took root near a simple cross. These saplings grew into the majestic Lípy u křížku, the three small-leaved linden trees we admire today. Lípy u křížku stands as a testament to time. These trees have witnessed generations come and go, their branches reaching towards the sky. In 2010, their trunks measured 302, 315, and 370 cm around. Their height reaches a uniform 25 meters. They create a significant landmark in the landscape. They are a beautiful grouping around the cultural monument of the cross. The small-leaved linden, also known as Tilia cordata Mill., is found throughout Europe. It thrives in a wide range. You can find it from Corsica and the Caucasus to the Crimean Peninsula. Often planted by people, it now graces landscapes beyond its natural range. In the Czech Republic, it spans from the lowlands to the lower mountainous regions. In its natural habitat, it prefers humus-rich, moist soils. It thrives in dry forests, meadows, and oak-hornbeam forests. There, it can grow up to 30 meters tall. The linden’s trunk starts with smooth bark, which later develops cracks with age. Its crown is a dense network of branches, often sprouting new growth near the trunk or from older branches. The leaves are heart-shaped with serrated edges. The underside has a characteristic grayish-green hue. The small, spherical fruits are easily crushed, adding a subtle texture to the forest floor. Flowers cluster in groups of 4 to 12 on drooping stems attached to leaf-like bracts. The blooming period lasts from June to July, filling the air with a delicate fragrance. Since ancient times, the small-leaved linden has been a cherished presence in the cultivated landscape. Planted near human settlements, it served as a village tree. It symbolized lineage and remembrance. It graced avenues and squares. It became a national symbol. Its soft wood has long been prized by woodcarvers. The blossoms, renowned for their soothing properties, are often used in teas. The Lípy u křížku are not just trees. They are living witnesses to history, their roots intertwined with the cultural heritage of the region. The District National Committee in Kolín declared these trees protected on June 29, 1987. They are listed in the Nature Conservation Register under the codes 104039/1, 2, and 3. Their presence enhances the beauty of this place. They offer a peaceful retreat, their rustling leaves whispering tales of bygone eras.
