Lion Rock itself dominates the landscape. From certain angles it truly resembles a lion perched majestically on a hill ridge. But there’s more than meets the eye. Nearby stands Mong Fu Shek Amah Rock. Legend tells of a devoted wife who tirelessly climbed these hills carrying her son. She watched for her husband’s return unaware he’d perished at sea. Her unwavering devotion moved the Goddess of the Sea who transformed her into stone uniting her spirit with her husband’s.

Beacon Hill another prominent feature adds another layer to Lion Rock Country Park’s rich history. Its name originates from warning fires lit during the Qing Dynasty. Soldiers used these fires as lookouts to warn against pirates and invaders. Today a radar station and police transmitter stand where those vital signals once burned.

The park isn’t just about history though. It offers breathtaking panoramic views. From Golden Hill’s slopes and the western ridge you can see Smuggler’s Ridge Tai Mo Shan Hong Kong’s highest peak Needle Hill Sha Tin New Town and even Kowloon’s northern reaches.

The diverse flora and fauna enhance the park’s allure. Slash Pine Strawberry Tree Ivy Tree Reevesia and Fishpole Bamboo are just some of the plants you might encounter. The park is also a haven for wildlife. The black-eared kite a migratory bird finds refuge in Eagle’s Nest a wooded ridge. Long-tailed macaques descendants of monkeys released in 1920 also call the park home. Remember it’s illegal to feed them though. They can bite.

Geologically Lion Rock Country Park is fascinating too. Various granites including Sung Kong Cheung Chau and Ma On Shan Granites are found here. Quartz veins containing wolframite a tungsten-bearing mineral further add to the area’s geological complexity.
