Did you know this building once marked a significant boundary? Today, we stand before the Linienamt Hernals. It is a testament to Vienna’s evolving urban landscape. The Linienamt Hernals stands on Neuwaldegger Strasse. Its story is intertwined with Vienna’s history of taxation and expansion.

Back in 1829, Vienna introduced a Verzehrungssteuer. This was a consumption tax. It was primarily levied on food. The Linienamt, or Imperial Consumption Tax Office, was born. Its job was to collect this tax on goods brought into the city for sale. Imagine the scene. Carts laden with produce approached the city limits. Officials meticulously checked their contents. Taxes were paid. This system significantly impacted the cost of living. The city center became more expensive. The outskirts offered some financial relief.

Originally, these Linienämter stood along the Linienwall. Think of it as Vienna’s outer fortifications. This wall encircled the suburbs closest to the Inner City. Near each Linienamt, you would find a Linienkapelle. These chapels were dedicated to Saint John Nepomuk. Locals affectionately called him “Hansl am Weg”.

As Vienna grew, so did its boundaries. In 1890 and 1892, the suburbs were incorporated into the city. The Linienämter shifted further outwards. This building, the Linienamt Hernals, emerged during that time. It was erected in the early 1890s. The shift reflected Vienna’s expanding tax borders. The Verzehrungssteuer itself was abolished in 1923. It was replaced by a multi-stage sales tax.

Many Linienamt buildings were repurposed. Some became tram stops. They even marked tariff zones. Passengers traveling beyond these former tax boundaries needed to buy extra tickets. The Linienamt at Rosenhügel even marked the end of the city tariff for Line 60. Traveling from Linienamt Speising to Mauer, Rodaun, or Perchtoldsdorf required paying additional fees.

Today, the Linienamt Hernals serves a different purpose. It stands as a residential building. It is a reminder of Vienna’s past. Its architecture hints at its former role. It is a piece of Vienna’s intricate urban puzzle.

Take a moment to appreciate this building. Think of the goods once taxed here. Consider the people who passed through. The Linienamt Hernals is more than just bricks and mortar. It represents a chapter in Vienna’s ever-changing story. Now, let’s continue our journey, exploring more hidden gems of Vienna.
