Was Linden always a peaceful mountain village? Not quite. Linden, nestled in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia, has a history as rugged as the terrain surrounding it. Located about 82 km west of Sydney, Linden sits along the Great Western Highway. It shares its postcode, 2778, with the neighboring village of Woodford. The train whistles through Linden’s station, a stop on the Main Western railway line, connecting this small community to the wider world.

Linden wasn’t always known by this pleasant, tree-lined name. Originally, this area was called Seventeen Mile Hollow, marking its distance from the Nepean River. Imagine a rough-and-tumble tollhouse here in 1849, collecting fees from weary travelers. This tollhouse stood until the arrival of the railway in the 1860s, when progress swept it aside. The railway station itself arrived in 1874. It took its name, not from the landscape, but from a grand home called Linden Lodge, built in 1865 by local businessman William Jolley Henderson.

Not far from the bustle of the present-day village lies a somber reminder of Linden’s past. A lonely gravestone marks the resting place of John Donohoe, who died on June 25, 1837. Was he a bushranger, as some believe? The mystery surrounding his life and death adds a layer of intrigue to Linden’s story. Nearby stands another curious landmark: Caley’s Repulse. This pyramid-shaped pile of rocks was initially thought to be an ancient Aboriginal construction. However, a more recent theory suggests that members of the Royal Australian Historical Society mistakenly created the rock pile in 1912. True or not, the story adds to the rich tapestry of Linden’s past.

For those seeking adventure, Linden offers trails leading to natural wonders like King’s Cave and the refreshing waters of Paradise Pool. The Linden Observatory, established in 1940 by amateur telescope maker Ken Beames, offers a glimpse into the cosmos. Here, far from city lights, you can marvel at nebulae and constellations through Beames’ historic reflector telescope. Linden, a village seemingly small and quiet, whispers stories of explorers, convicts, and stargazers. It’s a place where history blends seamlessly with the natural beauty of the Blue Mountains, offering a unique experience for every visitor.
