Hidden amidst the bustling energy of Causeway Bay, Lin Fa Kung Hill holds a secret. It’s a tale of dragons, goddesses, and a rock shaped like a lotus flower. Lin Fa Kung Temple, also known as the Lotus Temple, sits atop this hill. It was built in 1863 during the Qing dynasty. The temple is more than just a beautiful structure. It’s a living testament to the legend of Kwun Yam, the goddess of mercy.

Local lore says Kwun Yam appeared on the Lotus Rock, the very rock Lin Fa Kung Temple is built upon. She brought good fortune and protection from disasters. To honor her, the people built a temple resembling a lotus flower. They hoped Kwun Yam would continue to bless them with peace.

Lin Fa Kung Temple isn’t large, but its architecture is unique. The front of the temple is supported by tall pillars. The back rests directly on the Lotus Rock. You can still see part of the boulder peeking out from the exterior wall. Look up at the temple roof. You’ll see murals of dragons, phoenixes, and lotus flowers. These dragons symbolize the annual fire dragon dance, a tradition deeply connected to the temple and the Tai Hang district. Inside, hundreds of lotus flower lamps flicker, offering blessings to worshippers and their families. Each window is a work of art, carved from wood and adorned with Dui Lian, traditional Chinese couplets praising nature and Kwun Yam.

Kwun Yam is the main deity of Lin Fa Kung Temple. But she isn’t alone. Other deities reside within, including Tai Sui, the Sixty Gods of Time; Skanda, the Buddhist Temple Guardian; and Yum Choi Sun, the god of wealth. The goddess Kwun Yam is a central figure in Chinese culture. She is revered for her compassion and mercy. Myths and legends swirl around her, some claiming she was once a princess or even a male god. Her presence at Lin Fa Kung Hill is a powerful reminder of her role as a protector and a source of hope.

Lin Fa Kung Temple is a place of vibrant traditions. The Kwun Yam Festival is celebrated four times a year, marking important dates in Kwun Yam’s life. During the Kwun Yum Open Treasury, worshippers “borrow” prosperity from the goddess. And then there’s the Tai Hang Fire Dragon Dance, a spectacular event held during the Mid-Autumn Festival. The dragon dance team visits Lin Fa Kung Temple before their performance, seeking blessings and protection. Lin Fa Kung Hill is more than just a viewpoint. It’s a place where history, legend, and tradition intertwine. It’s a place where the spirit of Kwun Yam, the goddess of mercy, still lingers.
