Lin Chi Chi’s story intertwines with the life of Linji Yixuan, a prominent figure in Chan Buddhism during the Tang Dynasty. This temple takes its name from him. Linji, whose original name was Xing, embarked on a path of spiritual exploration. He traversed the landscapes of China, seeking wisdom from various masters.
One pivotal encounter led him to Huangbo Xiyun. Three times, Linji questioned Huangbo about the essence of Buddhism. Three times, Huangbo responded with a sharp strike from his staff. Confused yet intrigued, Linji sought guidance from the reclusive monk Dayu. It was through this encounter that Linji’s enlightenment blossomed. He returned to Huangbo, not with answers, but with a newfound understanding.
Linji eventually settled in Zhenzhou, Hebei. He established a modest temple. This temple, situated near a ford on the Hutuo River, became known as Linji Yuan, the “Temple Overlooking the Ford.” This temple, the very namesake of Lin Chi Chi before us, became a hub of Chan teachings. The teachings of Linji were unique, focusing on students’ faith in their own innate Buddha-nature.
Linji Yixuan passed away in 867. However, his lineage continued to flourish. Centuries later, the Linji school spread across East Asia, influencing various Zen traditions. It’s fascinating to consider the echoes of Linji’s teachings. His teachings resonate within these walls of Lin Chi Chi.
