On a crisp autumn day in 1890, a crowd gathered on Vienna’s Ringstrasse. They were here to witness the unveiling of the Liebenberg Denkmal. This monument, a towering obelisk, stands as a tribute to Johann Andreas von Liebenberg. Liebenberg served as mayor of Vienna from 1680 to 1683. He is remembered not only for his efforts combating the plague in 1679, but also for his vital role during the Second Turkish Siege of Vienna in 1683.

The Liebenberg Denkmal, designed by architect Franz von Neumann and sculptor Johann Silbernagel, was commissioned in 1887. It depicts Liebenberg’s unwavering dedication to the city. As mayor, he oversaw the city’s defenses during the siege. He personally supervised the construction of fortifications. He also organized the citizen militia, bolstering the morale of the besieged Viennese. Sadly, Liebenberg died just two days before the decisive battle that liberated the city.

The Liebenberg Denkmal is more than just stone and bronze. It’s a symbol of resilience and leadership in the face of adversity. The nine-meter-high obelisk rises from a stepped base, culminating in a gilded statue of Victoria, the goddess of victory. A bronze lion rests at the base, its paw on a Turkish shield, symbolizing Vienna’s triumph. Two bronze putti hold a gilded portrait medallion of Liebenberg, facing the bustling Ringstrasse. On the other side, an inscription honors Liebenberg: “To its leader, shining forth with courage and perseverance in utmost distress – grateful Vienna.”

The monument holds a subtle detail. If you look closely, you’ll see two putti holding Liebenberg’s portrait. This symbolizes the city’s reverence for his bravery and unwavering commitment during a dark time in Vienna’s history. The Liebenberg Denkmal survived tumultuous times. It was even damaged during World War II, only to be meticulously restored by 1949. The Liebenberg Denkmal stands proudly, a reminder of Liebenberg’s contribution. It serves as a testament to the indomitable spirit of Vienna.
