Whispers of history surround us. We stand before Lidingö kyrkogård a place where stories sleep beneath the earth. Lidingö kyrkogård is more than just a cemetery. It’s a living testament to the island’s past.

For centuries Lidingö Church stood sentinel. Its presence marked the heart of the island community. In 1661 the first maps showed the church and a few scattered homes. This quiet landscape transformed. An arched wall was built around the church and cemetery in 1755. Parts of this wall remain. A ring of lime trees appeared around 1810. They surround the oldest section of Lidingö kyrkogård.

Expansion came gradually. The cemetery grew south and east in 1854 then again in 1905 and 1909. New lime trees followed each expansion. New sections emerged over the years like Kyrkbacken and areas named Bakom kolumbariet The Upper Terraces and The Crescent. These sections added to Lidingö kyrkogård’s peaceful expanse. The columbarium opened in 1952. The Åsen area followed in 1964 designed by the talented Inger Wedborn. Wedborn’s designs influenced Lidingö kyrkogård deeply. Her work shaped the Nedanför kranskullen area too.

The expansion continued east and north through the 1970s and 1980s. In 1974 a memorial grove was added. A striking angel statue by Carl Milles adorned this grove in 1999. Lidingö kyrkogård’s serene beauty continued to evolve. The Vilokullen and areas near Norra gångsvägen were inaugurated in the 1990s and 2000s. These additions reflect Lidingö kyrkogård’s enduring evolution.

Many notable figures rest here. Hans Alfredson Gert Bonnier and Joakim Bonnier are among them. Their stories are woven into the fabric of this place. Lidingö kyrkogård. It’s a place of remembrance a place of peace. It’s a tranquil journey through the lives of many who have lived. They’ve shaped the island’s rich history. Their legacies linger here within the quiet beauty of Lidingö kyrkogård.
