“What can you tell me about this memorial?” someone asks. This is the Lidcombe War Memorial a tribute to the brave men and women who served. It stands as a solemn reminder of their sacrifices.
The Lidcombe War Memorial was unveiled on November 13th 1921. Major General Sir Granville Ryrie performed the honors. The Lidcombe Peace & Memorial Committee organized its construction.
Look closely at the base of the Lidcombe War Memorial. It is a tribute to the valor of those who served in the Great War from 1914 to 1919. The citizens of Lidcombe erected it. The inscription reads “Erected by the citizens of Lidcombe to commemorate the valor of the men who served in the Great War 1914-1919.”
The sides of the Lidcombe War Memorial bear inscriptions. “For God King and Country” is etched on one side. Names of the fallen surround the inscription. “Their names liveth for ever” it says.
Other sides list conflicts. Korea and Vietnam are memorialized. Malaya and Borneo also appear. Names of those who served in these wars are listed.
The years 1939 to 1945 mark another side. This commemorates World War II. Names of those who fell during that conflict are also inscribed.
Notice the plaques around the Lidcombe War Memorial. One plaque remembers the Merchant Navy seamen. They kept sea lanes open during the wars. “No unnamed tomb for all to see the sailors Valhalla is where they lie” it reads. “Lest we forget.”
Another plaque honors Australian women. It recognizes pioneers nurses servicewomen and the Women’s Land Army. It also recognizes those women who served at home during the war. “Lest we forget” it says.
One plaque pays tribute to all who served. World Wars 1 and 2 Korea Malaya Borneo Vietnam and the Gulf are listed. It includes East Timor and United Nations Peacekeeping forces. “Lest we forget” it reads.
“We will remember them” states another plaque. The Lidcombe RSL Subbranch honors all service men and women. Their service and sacrifice helped win peace for Australians. “Lest we forget” it says.
Consider the stories behind some of the names. Harold Edward Lassau served as Private with service number 6776. He was in the 2nd Infantry Battalion AIF WW1. Randolf Alfred Lassau also served. His service number was 5818. He was a Private in the 18th Infantry Battalion AIF WW1. Dominick Joseph Maher was a Gunner. His service number was 5516. He was part of the 1st Field Artillery Brigade AIF WW1.
