Ever imagine a shopping centre rising from the ashes of a car yard? Right here, at Lidcombe Shopping Centre, that’s exactly what happened. Lidcombe Shopping Centre stands on the former site of a Ford Fury car yard, office, and warehouse. These were demolished in 2005, paving the way for what would eventually become this bustling retail hub. The story of Lidcombe Shopping Centre is one of transformation. It began life in 2006 as Auburn Power Centre, a bulky goods centre. It housed stores like Anaconda, Spotlight, Dick Smith Powerhouse, and a Ten Pin Bowling Alley. In 2009, the centre was renamed Lidcombe Power Centre. The arrival of Costco across the road in 2011 added to the retail landscape of the area. However, despite population growth, Lidcombe Power Centre faced challenges. The lack of a supermarket and discount department store hindered its success. Recognizing the need for change, a $120 million redevelopment began in 2014. This ambitious project aimed to transform the centre from a bulky goods focus to a sub-regional shopping mall. The revamped centre, initially slated to be called The Marketplace Auburn, welcomed major retailers like Woolworths, Aldi, and Kmart. Anaconda and Spotlight remained, relocating within the upgraded space. Discount Party Warehouse and Tenpin City also stayed put. The redevelopment, spearheaded by Newmark Capital Ltd and APN Property Group Ltd, created up to 1,000 jobs. The new Lidcombe Shopping Centre opened in August 2015. In 2018, Vicinity Centres sold the property to a private investor for $145 million. Lidcombe Shopping Centre has seen further changes. Anaconda closed its doors in 2023, making way for KMALL09 and TK Maxx. Today, Lidcombe Shopping Centre boasts over 29,652 square meters of retail space. It includes tenants such as Kmart, Aldi, Woolworths, Daiso, Discount Party Warehouse, Spotlight, Tenpin City, TK Maxx, and KMALL09.
