What happened to the synagogues of Vienna? Look around. Here in front of you, you see one of the “Lichtzeichen Wien.” These 26 “light columns” are spread throughout the city. Each sculpture marks the former location of a Jewish synagogue, school, temple or prayer room destroyed by the Nazi regime in 1938. The Lichtzeichen Müllnertempel specifically commemorates the Vereinssynagoge des Vereines Chewra Beth Hatfila. This Association synagogue was erected between 1888 and 1889. Designed by architect Max Fleischer, the Müllnertempel provided seating for 248 women and 322 men. Sadly, it was destroyed in 1938, along with countless other Jewish places of worship. These illuminated memorials serve as stark reminders of the city’s lost heritage and stand as beacons of hope for a more tolerant future.
