Tucked away just north of the bustling heart of Prague, lies the charming village of Líbeznice. What’s in a name, you might ask? Well, Líbeznice translates to “lovely,” a fitting moniker for this picturesque village. Its name is derived from the surname Líbezný, meaning “the village of Líbezný’s people”. Líbeznice first appears in historical records in a 1236 document issued by King Wenceslaus I. Imagine a royal decree, its elaborate script proclaiming the existence of this small village. For over a century following 1294, Líbeznice was divided between the Vyšehrad Chapter and the Metropolitan Chapter at Saint Vitus Cathedral in Prague, two powerful religious institutions. The village even counted King George of Poděbrady and the Old Town of Prague among its owners. Later, from 1652 until 1848, with a brief interruption in the 1660s, the Nostitz family held sway over Líbeznice. Today, Líbeznice is home to around 3,200 inhabitants. The village is situated about nine kilometers north of Prague, nestled within the flat agricultural landscape of the Central Elbe Table. Although the surrounding terrain is relatively level, Líbeznice reaches an elevation of 229 meters above sea level. The dominant landmark of Líbeznice is the Church of Saint Martin. Built between 1788 and 1795, its late Baroque architecture stands as a testament to the village’s rich history. If you find yourself passing through, be sure to stop and admire the elegant lines and intricate details of this architectural gem. Líbeznice is more than just a name; it’s a quiet haven, a testament to centuries of history, and a lovely place to explore.
