Since 2006 several offices of the Department of Justice have called this building home. That’s right. The Department of Justice. You are standing where important legal decisions are made every day. The building’s history goes back further. It was originally built in 1982. It’s seen a lot of changes over the years.
But before it became the bustling office center it is today Liberty Square had a different life. Think back to 1977. Sasaki Associates designed the nearby plaza. This 5000 square foot public space sits between two iconic buildings. It’s a hidden gem. The plaza originally featured a unique attraction. There was an ice rink in winter and an open-air pool in summer. Shops and cafes surrounded it. It must have been a lively place. The ice rink and pool are gone now. They’ve been replaced by brick pavers. The western end of the plaza still boasts a beautiful 50-foot-wide waterfall. The water cascades over granite. It then flows into a lower pool.
This isn’t just a place for work. This is a location where history and modern life blend. The stone pavers are arranged like a map of Washington D.C. designed by Pierre Charles L’Enfant.
