It’s a historic landmark a stunning Mediterranean Renaissance Revival building. It was originally the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution. Renowned Washington architect Waddy Wood designed it in 1906.
The story of Levine Music DC Campus NW begins in 1976. Three women Diana Engel Ruth Cogen and Jaclin Marlin founded it. They honored Selma M Levine a Washington attorney and amateur pianist. Selma tragically died in 1975. Her love for music inspired this incredible institution. It started humbly in a church basement. Sixteen faculty members taught seventy students. A $10000 grant from the Eugene and Agnes E Meyer Foundation helped. It allowed the school to offer scholarships.
Levine Music DC Campus NW grew rapidly. It outgrew its early homes. It moved to larger spaces several times. In 1992 the Board of Trustees bought its current location. The renovation cost $89 million. It was completed in 1999. The building was renamed Sallie Mae Hall. This was thanks to a generous $1 million gift. Today Levine Music DC Campus NW is a leading community music school. It is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. It’s also the only all-Steinway community music center globally.
