Deep in the heart of the Tharawal land, lies Leumeah. It’s a place where time weaves a vibrant tapestry, a place whose name itself whispers an ancient invitation: “Here I rest.” Leumeah, a suburb nestled 52 km southwest of Sydney’s bustling CBD, in the City of Campbelltown, holds a story as rich as the land it occupies. Established in 1887 with the arrival of the railway, Leumeah didn’t officially adopt its melodic name until 1969. This name, borrowed from the language of the Tharawal people, pays homage to both the area’s original inhabitants and early settler John Warby, who named his farm Leumeah. Long before the rumble of trains and the hum of modern life, the Tharawal people called this land home. They roamed freely, living a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. They knew the secrets of the bush, relying on kangaroo, fish, yams, and berries for sustenance. Their tools, crafted from stone, bone, and shell, helped them build shelters, canoes, and clothing from possum skins. John Warby, a convict explorer who arrived in Sydney in 1792, formed a connection with the Tharawal people. He learned their language and their ways. In 1816, he was granted 260 acres in what is now Leumeah. There, he built his home, barn, and stables. Remarkably, his barn still stands today, a silent witness to the passage of time, now part of the Colonial Motor Inn. The railway station, Leumeah’s gateway to the wider world, arrived in 1887. Initially named Holly Lea, it was quickly renamed Leumeah following local protests. Development continued after World War II, with significant subdivision in the 1950s and 1960s. Today, Leumeah is a thriving suburb. It boasts a population nearing 10,000. Families are drawn to its convenient access to public transport, schools, shops, and restaurants. The median property price hovers around $615,000, a testament to its desirability. The streets of Leumeah echo the area’s history, bearing names of famous dams, lakes, explorers, and pioneer farmers. Even the home of Macarthur FC, Campbelltown Stadium, originally called Orana Park (“welcome” in the Aboriginal language), reflects this tradition. Leumeah, a place of rest, a place of history, a place where the past whispers secrets to the present.
