A flicker of light cuts through the grey North Sea. It’s the Leuchtturm List Ost. Its beam a lifeline for centuries.

This isn’t just any lighthouse. The Leuchtturm List Ost stands proudly on Sylt’s Ellenbogen peninsula. It’s one of Germany’s oldest active lighthouses. Constructed in 1857 it first shone on January 1 1858. Imagine the ships relying on its guiding light. Think of the sailors who navigated by its beam. Before the Leuchtturm List Ost there were only buoys. Many ships were wrecked near Sylt. Records show over 200 shipwrecks before 1929. The Danish government realised a reliable light was essential.

The Leuchtturm List Ost isn’t just a beacon. It’s a marvel of engineering. Built from cast iron plates on a concrete foundation. Its red lantern room is a steel structure with a copper roof. The tower’s interior is wood-clad. A wooden spiral staircase leads to the lantern room. Its light once ran on gas. In 1936 it switched to electric light powered by a diesel generator from its twin. The Leuchtturm List Ost and its twin List-West are 2700 meters apart. They are the oldest active cast-iron lighthouses in Germany.

The Leuchtturm List Ost’s Fresnel lens has a focal length of 250 mm. It uses a 230V/250W halogen metal vapor lamp today. A rotating mechanism creates its distinctive light pattern. Until 1977 a keeper lived here. Now it’s remotely controlled from Tönning.

This sturdy red and white striped tower has stood firm. Once threatened by coastal erosion. Erosion stopped around 2007. The Leuchtturm List Ost continues to guide ships through the Lister Tief and Hoyer Dyp waterways. It has served as a navigational aid for generations. It stands as a testament to human ingenuity and maritime history. This lighthouse is a symbol of hope and safety in the often treacherous waters of the North Sea. It’s a silent sentinel guarding Sylt’s northern edge. Its light a reassuring beacon across the waves. A visit here gives you a tangible connection to maritime history.
