Atop a dune stands the Leuchtturm Hörnum. Its red and white stripes gleam against the Sylt sky. For over a century this lighthouse has guided ships safely. It is a beacon a symbol of resilience against the relentless sea.

The Leuchtturm Hörnum is more than just a navigational aid. It is a testament to German engineering. Built in 1907 it is part of a series of almost identical lighthouses. The towers were constructed from bolted cast iron plates. These plates nicknamed Tübbings were created by the Isselburger Hütte in Isselburg. They made a surprising additional product. The Isselburger Hütte also held a monopoly on manufacturing Prussian mailboxes.

Imagine the journey of those cast iron sections. Shipped across the country assembled on a 17-meter-high dune. This is no ordinary lighthouse. From 1914 to 1933 it housed Germany’s smallest school. Two to five students received their education within its walls. The white ring marks the approximate level of the schoolroom.

The Leuchtturm Hörnum is 34 meters tall. Its light reaches up to 19 nautical miles. Its rotating mirror optic sends out two flashes every nine seconds. It’s a precisely timed signal. It’s a steady light a reassuring presence for those at sea.

The lighthouse even had a unique power source. Two single-cylinder heat engines powered dynamos until 1948. That’s when the lighthouse was finally connected to the electrical grid. The original batteries provided power for the longest winter night.

A nearby under-lighthouse once complemented the main tower. It helped guide ships through the shallow Hörnumtief. Several times it was rebuilt after stormy floods. Sadly after a final storm it had to be taken down in 2013. Now it has found a new home in a park.

Today the Leuchtturm Hörnum stands as a proud symbol of Sylt. Visitors climb its 16-meter-high base. They enjoy the breathtaking views. They can even get married within its historic walls. A special commemorative stamp was issued in 2007 in its honor. This testament to the lighthouse’s enduring significance. It makes a climb to the top well worth the effort. The Leuchtturm Hörnum is a destination of great significance. It’s more than just a lighthouse. It’s a piece of history waiting to be discovered.
