Where did the trains used to run? We are standing at the former entrance of the Lettentunnel. It was once an essential part of Zurich’s rail network. The Lettentunnel, a 2,093-meter-long tunnel, connected Letten station and Stadelhofen station. It played a crucial role in the Letten Line’s history. This line was part of the Lake Zurich right-bank railway. It was built in 1894 by the Swiss Northeastern Railway. The Lettentunnel, along with the Letten Line, was decommissioned in 1989. This was due to the opening of the new Hirschengraben Tunnel. Although plans were made to repurpose the Lettentunnel, they never came to fruition. Sadly, the tunnel faced structural issues and was eventually filled in between 2002 and 2004. The decision to fill it was made to prevent a potential collapse. However, its memory lives on, reminding us of Zurich’s fascinating railway history.
