Designed by Jindřich Fialka, the Letenská vodárenská věž stands as a testament to Prague’s ingenuity. Erected in 1887 and 1888, it is more than just a tower. It is a symbol of a city striving for progress.

The Letenská vodárenská věž originally supplied water to Bubeneč and part of Holešovice. For 25 years, it faithfully fulfilled its purpose. By 1913, however, its service as a water tower ended.

Standing 38.3 meters tall, the Letenská vodárenská věž is a five-story structure. Its Neo-Renaissance style is a feast for the eyes. Dormers adorn the pitched roof and a clock mechanism sits atop the tower. An external gallery rests on corbels at the highest level.

Time passed and the Letenská vodárenská věž was repurposed. It became a residential building. The adjacent engine room, reservoir, and operational buildings were demolished. Only the tower remained. In the 1980s, further demolition occurred, making way for a youth center and kindergarten.

Today, the Letenská vodárenská věž continues to serve the community. It houses club rooms and art studios. Since 1992, it has been protected as a historical monument.

Between 2016 and 2018, Prague 7 undertook a sensitive renovation of the Letenská vodárenská věž. The top floor, once a water tank, was transformed into a social hall with access to the gallery. A periscope was added, offering unique views.

One level below the hall, where the chief stoker once resided, a library was created. The remaining lower spaces became club rooms. The facade was restored to its original sandstone color.

A visit to the Letenská vodárenská věž is a journey through time. From its original function to its current role, it has always been a vital part of Letná. Climb the 130 steps to the observation deck. Take in the limited views due to surrounding buildings like the Molochov residential block. Spot the stadium and parts of Prague.

Do not miss the unique periscope in the highest floor. It offers views of Prague’s famous landmarks.

The Letenská vodárenská věž is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a living testament to Prague’s past and present. Its walls echo with stories of innovation, adaptation, and community. As you leave, remember the Letenská vodárenská věž. Think of its journey and the countless lives it has touched.
