Could a prophecy truly dictate the birth of a city? Let Kaung in Mandalay owes its existence to just such a prediction. The story begins, not in 1857 when the city was founded, but centuries earlier when Buddha himself visited Mandalay Hill. Accompanied by his disciple Ananda, Buddha encountered an ogress named Chandamukhi. She made a dramatic offering, cutting off her breasts and presenting them to Buddha. He then made a remarkable prophecy. He pointed to the site where Mandalay Palace would eventually stand and foretold that 2,400 years after his death, Chandamukhi, reborn as a king, would establish a magnificent city there. This prophecy deeply influenced King Mindon. Troubled by the British annexation of Lower Burma, including Yangon, King Mindon sought a safer location for his capital. In 1857, he established Mandalay, fulfilling the ancient prophecy. The city’s very layout reflects this prediction. Each side of the royal palace wall measures 2,400 ta (a ta is approximately 3.5 meters), symbolizing the 2,400 years prophesied by Buddha. Let Kaung, as part of Mandalay, shares in this incredible origin story. King Mindon was a remarkable ruler. He initiated seven key projects: the palace wall, the moat, Kuthodaw Pagoda with its 729 inscribed marble slabs, a higher ordination hall, the Atumashi Monastery, public houses for preaching, and a library for Buddhist scriptures. This grand vision cemented Mandalay’s status as a center of Burmese culture and Buddhist learning. Let Kaung, nestled within this historically rich city, is a testament to King Mindon’s vision and a living echo of Buddha’s ancient prophecy.
