“Seven acres of stories reside right here in L’Estrange Park.” A young boy’s incredible journey echoes through this space. L’Estrange Park officially opened in 1931. A mile-long procession marked the occasion, complete with fire brigade bands, athletes, and elaborate displays. L’Estrange Park wasn’t just celebrating its opening. It was celebrating Doylah Chappelow. This Mascot boy walked an astounding 5,700 miles from Sydney to Perth, and back. His journey, which began in September of the previous year, took him 234 days. He undertook this epic walk for a £20 wager. The wager included a challenging condition. Doylah couldn’t beg, borrow, or steal. He could only accept freely offered assistance. He left Sydney with minimal possessions. A khaki shirt, shorts, socks, shoes, and a handkerchief were all he had. By the journey’s end, his kit weighed 40 pounds. It contained cooking utensils, a blanket, spare clothes, and even gold specimens from Kalgoorlie. The Nullarbor Plain nearly claimed his life on the return trip. He left Rawlinna with a gallon of water and 46 miles of desert to cross. Halfway through, his water ran out. He survived by eating a raw rabbit. The ordeal cost him 19 pounds and a fortnight’s recovery at Haig. He then broke the walking record from Adelaide to Melbourne, completing it in just ten days. Doylah’s story, a testament to human endurance, is forever woven into the fabric of L’Estrange Park.
