What inspired the name of this district, Les Mamelles? It’s a rather unusual name, isn’t it? Well, look around. Do you see those two prominent peaks rising up? Those are the Morne des Mamelles, and they are the key to the district’s name.
Les Mamelles, in French, translates to “the breasts.” The peaks of Morne des Mamelles, with their rounded shape, reminded the early settlers of a woman’s bosom. This whimsical association led to the name, which has stuck ever since.
Interestingly, Les Mamelles itself is a relatively new district. It was carved out from the Plaisance district in 1993, mainly from reclaimed land. This makes it one of the youngest districts in Seychelles. While it might be young, it holds a unique charm and offers a blend of modern development and natural beauty, all watched over by its namesake peaks, the Morne des Mamelles.
