Born into a noble family in 1748, Leopold Leonhard Raymund Thun-Hohenstein’s life was anything but ordinary. Destined for the church, he rose to become the Bishop of Passau, a position of great power and prestige. Imagine him, clad in the rich robes of his office, the weight of centuries-old tradition on his shoulders. However, the tumult of the Napoleonic Wars brought chaos to his doorstep. The year 1803 saw the secularization of the Bishopric of Passau, stripping him of his temporal power. Unwilling to bow to these changes, Leopold Leonhard Raymund Thun-Hohenstein left Passau and eventually found refuge here in Prague. He purchased the Cibulka estate in 1815. This became his sanctuary, a place where he could shape his own world amidst the political storms raging across Europe. He poured his energy and resources into transforming Cibulka, leaving an indelible mark on the landscape. Sadly, much of his creation, the meticulously designed gardens that reflected his philosophical and artistic leanings, are lost to time. Yet, the surviving structures, like the Chinese Pavilion with its whimsical weather vane, hint at the grandeur that once was. In 1826, Leopold Leonhard Raymund Thun-Hohenstein passed away, leaving behind a legacy as complex and fascinating as the turbulent times he lived through. His tomb, a testament to his enduring presence, stands in the Malostranské Cemetery, a silent echo of a life lived at the crossroads of faith and history.
