Have you ever felt the cool dampness of a hidden woodland? Welcome to the Lengfelder Auwäldchen a protected landscape feature at the edge of Lengfeld. This little wood is tucked away in the floodplain of the Kürnach River. It’s right next to the fishponds close to the city limits of Estenfeld. Since August 1 1994 the Lengfelder Auwäldchen has been officially protected. Its natural vegetation is rare within the city. This gives the Auwäldchen exceptionally high nature conservation value. A display board has been informing visitors about the protected area since 2007. The Lengfelder Auwäldchen offers a home to many animals. Ringed snakes slow worms newts and toads live here. You might also spot kingfishers and grey herons. Birds of prey nest in the tall treetops. If the Kürnach River isn’t polluted you may even see crayfish and fish. The woodland is occasionally flooded and mainly consists of alders. Some are planted others are naturally growing. Various other trees add to the mix including ashes silver willows poplars and limes. Old overgrown pollard willows create a unique character. The different densities of shrubs are shaped by elder and hawthorn. In the center on the damp or flooded ground the stiff sedge grows. Meadowsweet a rose family member grows alongside thistles angelica and brooklime. In spring the celandine forms yellow carpets. In the margins you will find stinging nettles and various herbs.
