Whispers of history echo from Leeuwenhof’s walls. Leeuwenhof isn’t just a house it’s a living testament to Cape Town’s rich past. Imagine the bustling activity of this estate. It started as a small farm granted in 1693 by Governor Simon van der Stel. It was given to Guillaume Heems a successful businessman. Heems only owned it for two and a half years. He sold it to Henrik Bernard Oldenland the Company’s Garden botanist.

Leeuwenhof changed hands many times. Each owner left their mark. Johan Bräsler a Copenhagen native built the mansion we see today between 1764 and 1788. He planted native trees and cultivated fruits and vegetables. Captain Johannes Zorn a magistrate expanded the estate. He owned dozens of slaves. He transformed Leeuwenhof into a thriving farm with vast vineyards.

Sir Christoffel Brand the first Speaker of the Cape Parliament owned Leeuwenhof. His son Johannes Brand later became President of the Orange Free State. Petrus Johannes Kotzé another prominent owner served twice as Cape Town’s mayor. His son John Gilbert Kotzé became a renowned judge. The Kotzés witnessed the city’s growth encroaching on their land. The city even took their fountain for its water supply.

Millionaires Sammy Marks and Isaac Lewis bought Leeuwenhof in 1881. Lewis a mining magnate renovated the mansion adding antique furniture. In 1936 the Cape Provincial Administration bought Leeuwenhof. It became the official residence of the Cape Province Administrator. Today Leeuwenhof stands as a symbol of resilience and enduring legacy. It is the official residence of the Premier of the Western Cape. The renovated slave quarters now house a poignant exhibition. It tells the stories of those enslaved on this very land. Leeuwenhof’s story is one of prosperity and hardship a tale interwoven with the fabric of Cape Town itself. It is a place where history breathes and the past whispers secrets to the present.
