The memorial commemorates the sacrifices of local residents who served in World War I. Additional plaques honor those who served in subsequent conflicts like World War II Korea and Vietnam.

Major General Charles Rosenthal designed this understated arch. He was a well-known architect and a war veteran. Sir John Sulman a renowned architect and town planner oversaw the layout of the Honour Gardens. His son Geoffrey Sulman is also remembered here. Although he served in the Royal Flying Corps not the Australian forces. Geoffrey died in a tragic aircraft accident in 1917.
