Clutching your steaming Machi Café latte, have you ever considered the unlikely journey of Lawson? Right here in Tokyo, Lawson is a ubiquitous sight. But this convenience store giant has roots far from Japan, in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio. Lawson began as a humble dairy store in 1939, the brainchild of J.J. Lawson. He wanted a better way to sell his milk, so he opened a small shop at his dairy plant. It offered milk, bread, eggs, and a few other staples. This simple idea blossomed into Lawson’s Milk Company, a chain of stores mostly in Ohio. The company changed hands a few times, eventually becoming part of Sara Lee. In the mid-1980s, Sara Lee sold the US Lawson’s stores, which were eventually rebranded. The American Lawson’s had seemingly vanished. But across the Pacific, a different story was unfolding. In 1975, Lawson partnered with Japanese retailer Daiei, opening the first Japanese Lawson in Osaka. This marked the beginning of Lawson’s remarkable resurgence. It tapped into Japan’s rapid modernization and densely populated urban landscape, where the convenience store model thrived. Today, Lawson boasts over 14,000 stores across Japan. It’s the third-largest convenience store chain, trailing only 7-Eleven and FamilyMart. Lawson didn’t simply replicate the American model. It adapted and innovated, catering to Japanese tastes and needs. Think of the sheer variety. Freshly prepared bento boxes, onigiri, steaming bowls of noodles, and even collaborations with popular anime series. You can pay bills, collect online orders, and even buy auto insurance at a Lawson. The next time you step into a Lawson, remember its incredible journey. From a small Ohio dairy to a Japanese institution, Lawson’s story is a testament to adaptation and innovation.
