A hundred acres of farmland transformed. That’s the story of Lawrence Heights. Right here, in the mid-20th century, the landscape shifted dramatically. The familiar fields of the Mulholland farm, a landmark since 1814, vanished. In their place rose Lawrence Heights, one of Toronto’s largest public housing projects. The Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation orchestrated this transformation, envisioning a community that would address the city’s growing housing needs. Lawrence Heights was initially planned to feature towering high-rises. However, a crucial intervention changed that trajectory. Jack Brown, a government official and former World War II pilot, noticed a critical issue during a flight over the area. The proximity to Downsview Airport made high-rises a safety hazard. This realization led to a redesign, favoring the low-rise buildings and row houses that define Lawrence Heights today. Lawrence Heights became a mix of architectural styles. Row houses offered one, two, three, and four-bedroom apartments. A smaller number of single-family, five-bedroom houses provided larger living spaces. Two-story apartment buildings catered to senior citizens. Approximately 6,000 residents call Lawrence Heights home. The rents are geared to income, ensuring affordability for the community. Life in Lawrence Heights revolves around community connections. The Lawrence Heights Area Alliance, a group of volunteers from local churches and residents, plays a vital role. They have spearheaded youth and seniors programs, fostering a sense of belonging. The Lawrence Heights Health Centre further strengthens this network. It offers outreach, education programs, and clinical services, contributing to the overall well-being of the residents. Lawrence Heights is also undergoing a significant revitalization. This includes plans for new residential units, parks, and a new community centre. This revitalization aims to transform Lawrence Heights into a modern, mixed-income community.
