Why is this bench so special? It’s more than just a place to rest. This is the Lavička Jaroslava Foglara a bench dedicated to the celebrated Czech writer Jaroslav Foglar. Right here in Prague we can connect with his literary legacy.
The Lavička Jaroslava Foglara isn’t just any ordinary bench. It’s part of a project to commemorate Foglar’s life and work. These unique wooden benches are carved with scenes from his famous books. They are placed in locations significant to Foglar’s life. This particular bench is one of several.
Jaroslav Foglar lived much of his life at Korunní Street number 16 in Prague 2. He wasn’t confined to his home however. He wrote many of his books while sitting on benches in Prague’s parks and green spaces. He found inspiration in the city’s hidden corners. Riegrovy sady Havlíčkovy sady Stromovka and even Prokopské údolí were among his favorite writing spots.
This Lavička Jaroslava Foglara specifically commemorates his book Hoši od Bobří řeky. It was unveiled on October 10 2018. The sculptor Stanislav Pokorný created the carvings reflecting scenes from the book. The company Dřevo Náro sro built the bench. The Scout Foundation of Jaroslav Foglar installed it with support from Prague 2’s municipal authority. The book Hoši od Bobří řeky was first published in 1937. This bench’s unveiling celebrated the book’s 18th edition.
Notice the details in the carving. See the beavers and other elements. They’re skillfully done. Imagine Foglar himself sitting here. Perhaps he was sketching his next adventure. Maybe he was lost in thought. Maybe he was just enjoying a quiet moment in the park.
The Lavička Jaroslava Foglara is a testament to Foglar’s enduring influence. It’s a place for reflection and remembrance. It allows us to appreciate a writer who captured the imagination of generations of Czech children. It’s a small but significant part of Prague’s literary landscape. It’s a reminder that even simple objects like benches can tell extraordinary stories. Take a moment. Sit. Reflect. And let the spirit of Jaroslav Foglar inspire you.
