Lavender Bay. A name that conjures images of serenity. It wasn’t always so peaceful. This picturesque harbourside suburb has a rich and layered past. Its original name Gooweebahree or Quibaree means spring of fresh water in the Dharug language. The indigenous Cammeraygal people of the Eora nation called it home long before European settlement.
For a time in the 1820s and 1830s it was known as Hulk Bay. A prison hulk the Phoenix was anchored here. It was a grim reminder of colonial justice. The bay’s current name however comes from George Lavender. He was the boatswain of that very prison ship. He left a mark. His name lives on in the beauty of this place.
During the latter half of the 19th century Lavender Bay blossomed. Stately homes stood alongside a vibrant working waterfront. Boatbuilding and repairs were major industries. The area buzzed with activity. The rhythmic clang of hammers echoed across the water. The smell of fresh timber filled the air.
The arrival of the railway in the 1890s changed things. Then came the Sydney Harbour Bridge in the 1920s. Lavender Bay was transformed. A short-lived railway station opened in 1915 but closed after seven weeks due to passenger complaints.
Today Lavender Bay retains its charm. It’s a residential area with stunning harbour views. The Brett Whiteley House stands as a testament to its artistic heritage. Wendy Whiteley’s Secret Garden a hidden gem offers a tranquil escape. The Lavender Bay Baths a historic tidal pool although now gone are fondly remembered.
Imagine Sir Donald Bradman one of Australia’s cricketing greats. He lived on Bay View Street. He was among the first Australians to have a private telephone. Or Norman Lindsay the renowned artist. He also resided on Bay View Street. He found inspiration in these same views that we enjoy today.
