From a former prison to a vibrant park that’s Laurel Hill’s incredible story. Imagine a sprawling 2400 acres once enclosed by walls. This was the District of Columbia Correctional Facility in Lorton Virginia. For almost a century it was hidden from public view a vast oasis. Then came a transformation.

Laurel Hill Park a name honoring Revolutionary War patriot William Lindsay’s 1766 home. It’s now a jewel among Fairfax County’s parks. A world-class golf course a disc golf course 10 miles of trails an equestrian center and community gardens. All on this land. It’s a remarkable rebirth.

The story begins much earlier. In 1908 President Theodore Roosevelt’s penal commission found deplorable conditions. They recommended a new prison with rehabilitation through work. Congress purchased land north of the Occoquan River. Access to nature was important. Clean air and light were too.

Lorton became an agricultural work camp. Prisoners farmed. They ran a kiln making bricks for buildings and roads. During the Cold War a missile site even appeared. Part of a nationwide anti-aircraft defense system. It was quite the operation.

In 1998 Representative Tom Davis pushed for the prison’s closure. Fairfax County acquired the 2400 acres for a mere $4.2 million. A reuse plan maximizing open space was required.

A citizen advisory committee decided. About 1200 acres became parkland. The rest was used for schools residential areas and the Workhouse Arts Center. The land officially transferred in 2002. The transformation was then complete.

The Laurel Hill Golf Club opened in 2005. A world-class course it has challenged golfers for almost two decades. The Laurel Hill Greenway followed in 2008. It’s a 10-mile trail system built on the prison’s old railroad bed. It includes a disc golf course. The Equestrian Center came next near the old dairy barn.

In 2021 Laurel Hill’s Central Green opened. It features large picnic shelters a playground and even community gardens. The gardens are built on the former missile site. They’re designed for accessibility. Some produce is donated to a local food pantry.

Laurel Hill Park is truly special. From prison to park it’s a story of adaptive reuse. It’s a testament to community vision. This jewel serves millions of people each year. A reminder that even the harshest landscapes can be transformed.
