Wouldn’t you agree that stories of resilience often begin in the most unexpected places? Here we are at Laurel Grove Baptist Church. It is a testament to faith, community, and the enduring spirit of African Americans in Franconia Virginia.
Laurel Grove Baptist Church has a rich history deeply rooted in the Franconia community. Its story is not an accident. It began in 1884. A group of neighbors saw a need. African-American families lacked a convenient place to worship. They either worshipped at home or walked thirteen miles to Alexandria City.
These neighbors included George Carroll and Middleton Braxton. Thornton Gray and Laurenda Huntger were also involved. William and Georginna Jasper and Elizabeth Lomax completed the group. They were determined to create a space for their community. William Jasper and his wife Georginna played a crucial role. On May 10 1884 they bequeathed half an acre of land for the church. This land was next to the historic Laurel Grove Colored School. This act is recorded in Deed Book E; No. 5, page 383 in Fairfax County.
Laurel Grove Baptist Church started in a grove. Chestnut trees and wild laurel bushes surrounded it. From its beginning the church was dedicated to God. It embraced Christian principles. These included loving caring giving and sharing. These principles and the founders’ efforts made the church a reality.
The church became affectionately known as “The Little Church by the Side of the Road.” Its history unfolded sustained by prayer faith hope love and dreams. These dreams have lasted for 129 years.
Over the years Laurel Grove Baptist Church has had fourteen pastors. Currently Rev. Dr. James E. Scott leads the congregation. He is committed to continuing the church’s legacy.
Sadly Laurel Grove Baptist Church faced a setback in December 2004. A fire destroyed the historical church building. Yet the congregation remained steadfast. They persevered with one goal to rebuild.
For over 18 years the members worked tirelessly. They relied on personal donations. Now they are seeking further assistance to reach their goal. The church aims to raise $3000000. This will cover the sanctuary basement baptismal pool furniture and other amenities.
Laurel Grove Baptist Church’s history is a reminder. It shows the power of community faith and perseverance. It stands as a symbol of hope. The church continues to serve and inspire. It embodies Christian values. It welcomes all to share in its mission.
